Tour de King

King Township, Ontario

Sep30Sun

An event for everyone from the first-time rider to the seasoned pro taking you for a ride on some of the best back-roads, trails and terrain that Southern Ontario has to offer. This is a great course for mountain bikes, and cyclo-cross bikes with about 20% paved road, 30% gravel road and 50% trail (less trail for the 35 km)!  At the finish line a cycling festival with an amazing kid’s race, band, expo area and barbeque await!  Better weather is planned for the 2012 edition of the Tour!

Enjoy the Autumn Colours Along The Way!
The Tour de King will take riders from Seneca College to Cold Creek Conservation Area, through a variety of trails, roadways and road allowances.  The excitement of reaching a destination, crossing major roadways and being cheered on by friends, marshals and police as you cover ground is an exhilaration unmatched in one-day events.  King Township is the backdrop of this event, an area located just north of the GTA.  With a great mix of gorgeous rolling back-roads, minimal major roadways, and a municipality that embraces cycling, King Township is the perfect place to hold what is destined to become an Ontario fall classic!

The Course

The 50 km course for Tour de King will set this event apart from many other point to point events.  This course is designed to be accessible for mountain bikes,  and cyclo-cross bikes. A rider friendly course will feature 3 off-road cycling venues, a variety of road allowances, and some of the Oak Ridge’s Moraine’s most beautiful roadways.  Our starting point, Seneca College, will start riders off with a fun 6 km off-road experience.  Highlights along the way include IMBA designed Centennial trails, off-road sections along parts of the ORTA trail, and a grand finale at Cold Creek - capping off a truly memorable ride!  The 35km course will feature less off-road sections and more paved and secondary gravel roads, however you will still need a mountain bike, or cyclo-cross bike as there will still be some moderate off-road sections.

The Bike Debate
We have been asked what bike we'd choose if doing this event. Mountain bike is probably better for most participants, but if you can ride singletrack on a cyclo-cross bike go for it. Derek Zandstra is using a hardtail 29r! With some longer road sections a cross bike will have advantages in spots. Keep in mind the first 50% of the course has about 9 km of singletrack, with some gnarly road allowances.

Important
Secondary corners will be marshaled by volunteers, while major corners and road crossings will be managed by local police.  Remember to observe rules of the road, and be aware of other trail and road users as you weave your way from Seneca to Cold Creek.

Barbeque
There will be additional tickets available for the barbeque for spectators.  These will be available for purchase on site at an additional cost.
