Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What types of bikes do you sell?
A: Chico Racing doesn’t sell bikes, or any tangible product. We sell a lifestyle, events that push people to compete in a fun, safe and nurturing environment.
Q: I don’t know the first thing about racing, how do I get started?
A: All our events have beginner categories or allow new mountain bike riders, whether it be a Plastiglas Ontario Cup, a 24 Hour or an 8 Hour event. 2011’s new Tour de King promises to be a great day of riding for riders of all abilities.
Q: My kids are interested in racing, how do I get them involved?
A: Our Ontario Cup series caters to kids 9 and over, while our FREE Shimano kids race at both 24 Hour events is open to all ages 11 & under. There’s an Epic 8 hour kids relay race, and Chico also will be hosting a yearly Learn To Race Clinic. Just sign your kids up for any of the above events, and get them in on the action!
Q: I don’t want to commit to any races, can I do them last-minute?
A: All but our relay events have day-of registration, so yes you can. For the 24 Hour and 8 Hour events you must be pre-registered.
Q: I have a bike in working order and a helmet, is that all I need for mountain biking?
A: While it’s a good start, you’ll also need a race license for Ontario Cups or a 1 day permit. For the 8 Hour and 24 Hour events licenses are pre-paid so there is no worry, while our other events require that you buy licenses. For information on licenses check out www.ontariocycling.org. Many events require either a full license, citizen permit, or a one-day permit.
Q: I don’t feel like racing today, can I get a refund?
A: All events rely on pre-registration so you share some of the risk with us. Discounts make pre-registration a smart option, however refund policies vary on the event. Please don’t ask us for refunds on the day of the event.
Q: I REALLY want to do your 24 Hour event, but only have 3 people committed. What should I do?
A: To ensure a spot, and the best possible campsite, register the team with a mere $150 deposit. This will give you ample time to find more people, and if you can’t, we have a Rider Find Forum to look for other riders. Often riders come the day of the event looking to find a team to ride on, so just register and let the riders come to you.
Q: I’m not that competitive, but I still want to race. What should I do?
A: You’re just the person we like to have out. If you’re looking for fun, to race in new destinations, and meet new people, do the Beginner or Sport races at our Plastiglas Ontario Cup races and definitely consider doing the Tour de King. Also, getting some like-minded friends is the perfect way to make up a team for our 24 Hour events as most riders come out for the experience, the ride and a weekend with friends.
Q: What happened to Crank the Shield?
A: We’ve taken a year off to work on improvements and create demand for Crank the Shield 2012. Stay tuned for updates on next year’s Crank.
Q: What do I need for your new Trail Running events?
A: Simply bring your shoes and some fitness. 2011 is our first year organizing these events and we are looking forward to them.
